The ISPE Study Course offers a flexible and self-paced way to deepen your knowledge of swimming pool engineering. Designed for convenience, this course allows you to learn at your own speed—no deadlines, no pressure, just structured learning that fits around your schedule.

Course Structure
The course is structured around four core areas, with each module encompassing the following content:
Heating
- Outdoor Pools – Heat losses and heat gains
- Definitions and heating formulae
- How to size a pool heater
- The different methods of heating a pool
- An introduction to indoor pools
- How to calculate area and volume
- Conversion formulae and basic definitions.
Construction
- Brief history
- Construction requirements and site conditions
- Liner pools
- Concrete block construction
- Double skin block construction
- Gunite and shotcrete
- Concrete pool finishes
- Fibreglass, GRP, ceramic and stainless-steel modular pools.
Chemicals
- Water chemistry
- The nature of water
- Pool water treatment
- Treatment chemicals
- Pool chemical safety.
Filtration
- Filtration
- Filter systems and media
- Filter pumps
- Pipeline and circulation systems
- Turnover rating and measurement.
Each subject is broken down into sections, with review questions at the end to test your understanding. By answering these without referring to your notes, you can check your progress and reinforce your learning.
Preparing for the Exam
- Mock exam questions are available every December to help students practise.
- Official exams take place once a year in March. (please keep an eye on our Diary Dates page for regular updates)

Exam fees are £50 for all four modules, or £12.50 per module if resits are required.
